McIlroy, Rory (1989-…), a professional golfer from Northern Ireland, became one of the most exciting and successful golfers of the 2000’s. McIlroy’s skill as a player and his outgoing personality have made him one of the world’s most popular athletes.

McIlroy has starred on both the European and American professional golf circuits. He has won three of golf’s four major tournaments, the United States Open in 2011, the PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association of America) Championship in 2012 and 2014, and the British Open in 2014. The other major is the Masters Tournament . McIlroy won the U.S. Open with a record 16-under-par score of 268. He was the youngest U.S. Open winner since the American Bobby Jones in 1923.

McIlroy was born on May 4, 1989, in Holywood in Northern Ireland. He began playing golf as a child and left school at the age of 16 to concentrate on an amateur golf career. McIlroy achieved the number-one amateur ranking in the world in 2007, and later that year he turned professional at the age of 18.

McIlroy has also played on the European Ryder Cup team that faced the U.S. team in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2021. The Ryder Cup is a competition between U.S. and European golfers that is held every two years. The 2020 Ryder Cup competition was played in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
