Cabrera, Miguel

Cabrera, Miguel (1983-…), was one of the best players in Major League Baseball (MLB) history. In 2012, while playing for the Detroit Tigers in the American League (AL), Cabrera won the triple crown of batting. That year, he led the AL in batting average (.330), home runs (44), and runs batted in (RBI’s) (139). Cabrera was the first major leaguer to win the triple crown since Carl Yastrzemski of the Boston Red Sox in 1967. Cabrera was named the AL Most Valuable Player in 2012 and 2013. In 2022, he became the seventh player in MLB history to have both 3,000 hits and 500 home runs. Cabrera batted and threw right-handed.

Jose Miguel Cabrera Torres was born on April 18, 1983, in Maracay, Venezuela. The National League‘s Florida (now Miami) Marlins signed him as an amateur free agent in 1999. Cabrera played in the minor leagues before his debut with the Marlins in June 2003. He played first base, third base, and the outfield for the Marlins from 2003 to 2007. Cabrera was traded to Detroit after the 2007 season. He played for the Tigers from 2008 to 2023. While playing for the Tigers, Cabrera was primarily a designated hitter (DH), but also played first base.

Cabrera was known for his consistency as a hitter and his ability to hit for power to all fields. He had a lifetime batting average over .300 and led the AL in batting average four times. He led the AL twice each in doubles, home runs, and RBI’s. During his career with the Marlins and Tigers, Cabrera was a 12-time All-Star and won the Silver Slugger award as the best hitter at his position seven times. In 2021, Cabrera became the 28th player in major league history to hit 500 career home runs. In 2022, he became the 33rd player with 3,000 hits. Cabrera retired from playing baseball in 2023.
