Murphy, Chris (1973-…), became a United States senator in 2013. Murphy, a Democrat, represents Connecticut. Prior to his election to the Senate, Murphy served in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Connecticut General Assembly.
Christopher Scott Murphy was born on Aug. 3, 1973, in White Plains, New York. He grew up in Wethersfield, in central Connecticut. In 1996, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Williams College in Massachusetts. In 2002, he received a law degree from the University of Connecticut School of Law, in Hartford.
In 1997, Murphy began serving on the Planning and Zoning Commission for Southington, Connecticut. In 1998, he won a seat in the state House of Representatives. He was reelected in 2000. In 2002, Murphy won election to the first of two terms in the state Senate. In 2006, he was elected to the U.S. House. He was reelected in 2008 and 2010. In the House, Murphy supported efforts to expand access to health care and to keep manufacturing jobs in the United States. He also was a supporter of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) rights and same-sex marriage.
In 2012, Murphy defeated former professional wrestling executive Linda McMahon for a Connecticut U.S. Senate seat. Murphy won reelection in 2018.
