Hathaway, Anne (1982-…), is an American actress. She is known for playing free-spirited and independent women. Hathaway won an Academy Award as best supporting actress for her performance in Les Misérables (2012), based on the successful stage musical.
Anne Jacqueline Hathaway was born on Nov. 12, 1982, in New York City. She moved with her family to Millburn, New Jersey, when she was a child. While in high school, she acted in plays and sang in choral groups. She studied English at Vassar College. She also attended the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York University. She made her professional acting debut in 1999 in the television series “Get Real.”
Hathaway made her motion-picture debut as the character Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries (2001). Mia is a 15-year-old heir to the throne of a European country. Hathaway portrayed the character again in the film’s sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004).
Hathaway’s other notable films include Ella Enchanted (2004); Brokeback Mountain (2005); The Devil Wears Prada (2006); Becoming Jane (2007); Get Smart (2008); Rachel Getting Married (2008); Alice in Wonderland (2010) and its sequel, Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016); The Dark Knight Rises (2012); Interstellar (2014); and The Intern (2015). Hathaway also provided her voice for the character of a bird in the animated film Rio (2011). She won an Emmy Award in 2010 for her voice-over performance for her portrayal of a character named Princess Penelope in an episode of the animated television series “The Simpsons.”
