MacFarlane, Seth

MacFarlane << muk FAHR luhn >> , Seth (1973-…), is an American animator, writer, director, voice actor, and comedian. He is the creator of the popular, controversial animated television situation comedy “Family Guy,” which began in 1999.

“Family Guy,” known for its crude humor, follows the adventures of the Griffins, a blue-collar family that lives in the fictitious town of Quahog, Rhode Island. The family consists of the married couple Peter and Lois Griffin, their three children—teenage daughter, Meg; teenage son, Chris; and the infant Stewie—and their humanlike dog, Brian. The show has won several Emmy Awards.

MacFarlane also co-created the animated television comedies “American Dad!” which began in 2005, and a “Family Guy” spinoff, “The Cleveland Show,” which began in 2009. MacFarlane voices characters on all three of these shows.

MacFarlane directed and co-wrote the motion-picture adult comedy Ted (2012) and its sequel, Ted 2 (2015), about a teddy bear who comes to life and his man-child companion. MacFarlane also provided the voice of Ted, the teddy bear. MacFarlane directed, co-wrote, and starred in the comedy-Western A Million Ways to Die in the West (2014). He also provided the voice of Mike, a saxophone-playing mouse, in the animated motion-picture feature Sing (2016).

Seth Woodbury MacFarlane was born on Oct. 26, 1973, in Kent, Connecticut. He began cartooning as a child. MacFarlane studied animation at the Rhode Island School of Design and graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

MacFarlane is also a singer. In 2011, he released Music Is Better Than Words, a collection of American traditional big band and pop standards.
