Chopra, Yash Raj

Chopra, Yash Raj, << CHOH pruh, yash rahj >> (1932-2012), was an Indian motion-picture director and producer. He was known as Bollywood’s “king of romance” because of the many romantic films that he directed. Bollywood is the name for India’s motion-picture industry. Chopra’s films were known for their effective use of music and exotic settings. He won Filmfare Awards as best director for the romantic mystery Waqt (1965), the crime thriller Ittefaq (1969), the romantic musical Daag: A Poem of Love (1973), and the action film Deewaar (1975). Filmfare Awards are presented annually for artistic and technical excellence in filmmaking in the Hindi language . The Indian magazine Filmfare presents the awards.

Chopra was born on Sept. 27, 1932, in Lahore in what is now Pakistan. He began his film career in the 1950’s, working with his brother B. R. Chopra, also a Bollywood filmmaker. Yash Raj Chopra made his debut as a director with the melodrama Dhool Ka Phool (1959). He founded his own studio, Yash Raj Films, in the early 1970’s. His other notable films included Kabhi Kabhie (1976), Chandni (1989), Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Veer-Zaara (2004), and Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012).

Chopra died on Oct. 21, 2012. His son Aditya Chopra is also a director, and his son Uday Chopra is an actor and producer.
