American English coonhound

American English coonhound is an athletic and energetic dog breed known for its speed, endurance, and strong but racy (sleek) body. The dog has dark brown, wide-set eyes and soft ears that hang low. Its coat is medium length and may be red-and-white ticked; blue-and-white ticked; tricolored with ticking; red and white; or white and black. It stands from 23 to 26 inches (58 to 66 centimeters) high at the shoulder and weighs from 40 to 65 pounds (18 to 29 kilograms).

American English coonhounds descend from the European scent hounds, which were brought into the American colonies in the 1600’s and 1700’s. Early colonists bred the American English coonhound to adapt to the rough terrain of the southeastern United States. The American English coonhound is capable of hunting fox and raccoon all night long. American English coonhounds are happy indoors but need lots of mental and physical exercise.
