Nadella, Satya (1967-…), is the chief executive officer (CEO) of Microsoft Corporation . Like Microsoft’s founders, Bill Gates and Paul Allen , Nadella combines both technical and business skills. Before becoming CEO, he led Microsoft’s efforts to develop cloud computing services. Cloud computing involves storing data and using software on the Internet , rather than on a particular computer.
Nadella was born in 1967 in Hyderabad , India. The city hosts one of the largest Microsoft research and development facilities outside the United States. Nadella played cricket as a boy, which he later said was key to his development of teamwork and leadership skills. He graduated from the Mangalore University with a degree in electrical engineering. In 1988, Nadella came to the United States. He studied computer science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He also studied business administration at the University of Chicago.
Nadella began his career at the computer company Sun Microsystems. He joined Microsoft in 1992 as a program manager and was promoted many times to higher positions. Nadella oversaw Microsoft’s extremely popular Office suite of software. He also led development on the Bing search engine . Nadella became CEO on Feb. 4, 2014, replacing Steve Ballmer . Many observers felt that the promotion of Nadella, with his long work history at Microsoft, helped contribute to the company’s stability. As CEO, Nadella has sought to strengthen Microsoft’s position in cloud computing. He is credited with being a level-headed leader who is inclusive of others’ opinions.
