Hemsworth, Chris (1983-…), is an Australian motion-picture actor known for his roles in action and adventure films. He gained fame as the character Thor in the hugely popular “Thor” and “Avengers” series of action films, which began in 2011 and 2012, respectively. The series are based on Thor and Avengers comic books, which feature Thor and other superheroes. Hemsworth also has appeared in comedy, drama, fantasy, science-fiction, and suspense films.
Hemsworth was born in Melbourne, Australia, on Aug. 11, 1983. He later moved with his family to Australia’s Northern Territory, and then to Phillip Island, south of Melbourne. In the early 2000’s, Hemsworth acted in a few episodes of Australian television programs. From 2004 to 2007, he played the high school student and lifeguard Kim Hyde on the popular Australian soap opera “Home and Away.” In 2006, Hemsworth gained popularity as a contestant on the Australian TV series “Dancing with the Stars.” Hemsworth’s brothers, Liam and Luke, also became actors.
Hemsworth’s first Hollywood film was Star Trek (2009), based on an American TV series from the 1960’s. In the film, he portrayed George Kirk, the father of starship Enterprise Captain James T. Kirk.
Hemsworth’s other films include the thrillers A Perfect Getaway (2009) and The Cabin in the Woods (2012); the adventure fantasies Snow White and the Huntsman (2012) and The Huntsman: Winter’s War (2016); Red Dawn (2012), a remake of a 1984 action film; the sports drama Rush (2013), in which he played the real-life race car driver James Hunt; the action thriller Blackhat (2015); the adventure film In the Heart of the Sea (2015); and Ghostbusters (2016), a remake of a 1984 comedy film.
In 2021, Chris Hemsworth was made a member of the Order of Australia for his contributions to the performing arts and to charitable organizations. The order is Australia’s highest award for service to the country or humanity.
