Bogut, Andrew (1984-…), was a star Australian basketball player. He was the first Australian player to be drafted number one in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Milwaukee Bucks drafted him in 2005. Bogut, who played center, stands 7 feet (2.13 meters) tall.
Andrew Michael Bogut was born to Croatian immigrant parents in Melbourne on Nov. 28, 1984. He played basketball for the Australian Institute of Sport, which toured the United States in 2001 and 2002. Bogut led the Australian team to the 2003 Junior World Championships and was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. He competed for Australia in the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games but missed the 2012 games with a broken ankle.
Bogut attended the University of Utah in the United States from 2003 to 2005. There, he was an All-American in 2005 and was named the Naismith Player of the Year. In his rookie season in the NBA, Bogut averaged 9.4 points and 7 rebounds a game and was named to the All-Rookie first team.
Bogut was hampered by injuries throughout his professional career. His best scoring season came in 2009-2010, when he averaged 15.9 points a game. In the 2010-2011 season, he led the NBA by averaging 2.6 blocked shots per game. In 2012, Milwaukee traded Bogut to the Golden State Warriors. He helped the team win a championship in the 2014-2015 season. Golden State traded Bogut to the Dallas Mavericks after the 2015-2016 season. In February 2017, Dallas traded Bogut to the Philadelphia 76ers, who released him four days later. Bogut then signed in March 2017 with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He joined the Los Angeles Lakers in September 2017. The Lakers released Bogut in January 2018.
In April 2018, Bogut briefly retired from the NBA and joined the Sydney Kings of the National Basketball League (NBL) in Australia. He won the league’s Most Valuable Player Award for his play for the Kings during the NBL’s 2018-2019 season. In March 2019, Bogut returned to the NBA and signed with the Golden State Warriors for the remainder of the team’s 2018-2019 season. Bogut then rejoined the Sydney Kings for the 2019-2020 NBL season. He announced his retirement in late 2020. He later became a part owner of the Kings.
