Madison Square Garden is a famous indoor arena in New York City, New York, that is the home for both sports events and entertainment attractions. The Garden, as it is often called, stands between Seventh and Eighth avenues from 31st Street to 33rd Street in the borough (district) of Manhattan.
Madison Square Garden presents hundreds of events each year. It is the home of the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL). Both teams are owned by the Madison Square Garden Sports Corp. The facility is also used for college basketball games and other sporting events as well as for such entertainment attractions as concerts and circus performances. It also hosted the Democratic Party’s national conventions in 1924, 1976, 1980, and 1992. The seating capacity varies with the event. Capacity for an NBA game is about 20,000 spectators. An NHL game can seat about 18,000.
The current Madison Square Garden opened in 1968. It was the fourth arena by that name in New York City. The first Garden (1879-1890) and the second Garden (1890-1925) took their name from their location, Madison Square at East 26th Street and Madison Avenue in Manhattan. The third Garden stood from 1925 to 1968 on Eighth Avenue between 49th and 50th streets.
