Wembley Stadium

Wembley Stadium is a famous soccer stadium in London , England . Soccer is called football in many countries. Wembley has been the site of historic national as well as international soccer matches. The stadium gets its name from its location in the Wembley area of northwest London. The original Wembley Stadium opened in 1923 and closed in 2000. It was demolished in 2003. A new Wembley Stadium, constructed on the same site, opened in 2007.

The new stadium has a capacity of up to 90,000 people. It is the largest stadium in the United Kingdom and the second largest in Europe , behind only Camp Nou in Barcelona , Spain . Wembley has a partially retractable roof and the Wembley Arch, which soars over the stadium 134 meters (440 feet) high at its peak.

Wembley Stadium hosts the annual finals of the Football Association Cup, one of British soccer’s most important competitions. It also was the site of the 1966 World Cup final and several European Cup finals. In addition to soccer, Wembley has hosted rugby matches, boxing matches, and annual games between teams of the National Football League from the United States . The stadium was also the site of the soccer finals in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games . In addition, Wembley has presented many concerts by notable pop and rock performers.
