Steven David Daines was born on Aug. 20, 1962, in Van Nuys, California. He was raised in Bozeman, Montana. Daines graduated from Montana State University in 1984 with a degree in chemical engineering. He then began a career in business at the consumer goods company Procter & Gamble. He later worked for his family’s construction business, and at a software company.
Daines ran for lieutenant governor of Montana in 2008 but was unsuccessful. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2012 and took office in 2013. As a congressman, Daines served on the House committees on Natural Resources, Transportation and Infrastructure, and Homeland Security. He won election to the Senate in 2014.
