The dog is found all over the island, especially in the area surrounding Mount Etna. The Cirneco dell’Etna is named for the Etna region and is used for hunting rabbits and fowl.
The Cirneco dell’Etna may be any color from light tan to chestnut. It has a slender but strong build with long limbs and alert, upright ears. The Cirneco dell’Etna stands 17 to 20 inches (43 to 51 inches) tall and weighs from 18 to 26 pounds (8 to 12 kilograms). It is affectionate and independent. The dog is a keen hunter and an excellent jumper. The Cirneco dell’Etna is one of the few modern breeds that evolved (developed over time) as a result of its environment.
