Boerboel << BOOR bul >> is a breed of dog originally developed as a farm dog by Dutch settlers in South Africa. The dog protected against large predators (hunting animals) and tracked and held wounded game.
The boerboel stands from 22 to 27 inches (56 to 69 centimeters) tall and weighs 150 to 200 pounds (68 to 90 kilograms). It has a short, dense, smooth coat. The coat may be any shade of brown, red, or light tan. It may also be brindled (streaked light and dark). A boerboel may have a black “mask” of facial coloration similar to that of a mastiff.
The boerboel is strong, protective, confident, and agile. It makes a great guardian and companion, but needs regular exercise.
