Meyer, Urban (1964-…), is a leading head football coach. Meyer became one of only two head coaches in the modern era to win national championships at two different universities. He won championships at the University of Florida in 2006 and 2008 and at Ohio State University in 2015. The other head coach is Nick Saban. In the 2000’s, Saban won a championship at Louisiana State University and several at the University of Alabama.
Urban Frank Meyer III was born on July 10, 1964, in Toledo, Ohio, and grew up in Ashtabula. He played defensive back at Cincinnati University in 1984 and coached high school football in 1985. He was an assistant coach at Ohio State University (1986-1987), Illinois State University (1988-1989), Colorado State University (1990-1995), and Notre Dame University (1996-2000). Meyer got his first head coaching job at Bowling Green University in Ohio in 2001, coaching there for two seasons. He coached at the University of Utah in 2003 and 2004 and then served as head coach at the University of Florida from 2005 to 2010.
Meyer retired as a coach after the 2010 season for health reasons and served as a television football analyst and commentator for a year. He accepted the position of head coach at Ohio State in November 2011. His team went undefeated in the 2012 season. At the end of the 2014 regular season, Ohio State was selected as one of the four teams to compete in the first College Football Playoff National Championship. In January 2015, Meyer’s team defeated those of the University of Alabama and the University of Oregon, the first- and second-ranked teams in the country, to win the national championship. Meyer retired as Ohio State’s head coach following the 2018 season. In 2021, the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League (NFL) hired him to be head coach. That same year, the Jaguars fired Meyer during his first season with the team.
