Rossa

Rossa << ROH sah >> (1978-…) is a popular Indonesian singer. She is one of the bestselling vocal artists in the Southeast Asian island nation of Indonesia and other Malay-speaking countries. Rossa has won a number of Anugerah Musik Indonesia (AMI) awards. The AMI awards, presented annually, are the most prestigious music awards in Indonesia. Rossa has been a judge on the television singing-competition shows “Indonesian Idol,” “X Factor Indonesia,” and “Indonesia’s Got Talent.”

Sri Rossa Roslaina Handayani was born on Oct. 9, 1978, in Sumedang, in the western part of the island of Java. Java is the economic and political center of Indonesia. She began singing at the age of 10. Her recording Untuk Sahabatku, a children’s album, was released in 1988, under the name Rossa Rose. Her adult career took off with her studio album Nada-Nada Cinta, released in 1996 under the name Rossa. It became a number-one album in Indonesia. Rossa studied at the University of Indonesia and earned a bachelor’s degree in communications. During that time, her studio album Tegar (1999) and its title song became huge hits in Indonesia.

Rossa’s other albums include Kini (2002); Kembali (2004), featuring the hits “Aku Bukan Untukmu” and “Pudar”; Rossa (2009), featuring the duet “Terlanjur Cinta” with the Indonesian singer Pasha; Harmoni Jalinan Nada & Cerita (2010), featuring the hit “Ku Menunggu”; Love, Life and Music (2014); A New Chapter (2017); and Another Journey: The Beginning (2023). She also performed the title hit song for the soundtrack of the popular 2008 Indonesian motion picture Ayat-Ayat Cinta. A music video for the song became popular on the video-sharing website YouTube. Rossa also performed on the hit duet “Aku Bersahaja” (2011) with the Malay-Singaporean singer Taufik Batisah, a winner on the singing-competition television show “Singapore Idol.”
