Taslim, Joe

Taslim, Joe (1981-…), is an Indonesian motion-picture actor, model, and martial artist. He became known for his performance as Sergeant Jaka, a member of an elite police squad, in the Indonesian martial arts action film The Raid: Redemption (2011). Taslim gained international recognition for his role as a cold-blooded killer who uses martial arts to combat a group of crimefighters who are former illegal street car racers in the popular Hollywood action film Fast & Furious 6 (2013).

Johannes Taslim was born on June 23, 1981, in Palembang, on the island of Sumatra in the Southeast Asian nation of Indonesia. He began training in martial arts as a child. He was a member of the Indonesia national judo team from 1997 to 2009. Taslim won several gold medals in national judo championships. He also won a silver medal at the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in 2007. The SEA Games are a biennial multi-sport competition involving participants from the countries of Southeast Asia. Taslim also began modeling part-time in the early 2000’s. An injury forced him to retire from judo competition in 2009.

Taslim made his motion-picture acting debut in the Indonesian thriller Karma (2008). He has also acted in several other Indonesian films, including the thriller Rasa (2009), the action film Dead Mine (2012), and the drama La tahzan (2013), and in the Hollywood science-fiction film Star Trek Beyond (2016).
