Dolce & Gabbana

Dolce & Gabbana is an Italian fashion house (company). It was founded by designers Domenico Dolce << DOHL chay >> and Stefano Gabbana. They are known primarily for their extravagant women’s wear, featuring corseted bodices (tops of dresses), cinched waists, animal prints, golden and jeweled decorations, bright gemstone-colored palettes, and abundant luxurious fabrics. Domenico Dolce was born on Aug. 13, 1958, in Polizzi Generosa, near Palermo, Sicily . Stefano Gabbana was born on Nov. 14, 1962, in Milan , Italy . Following in the footsteps of his father, a tailor, Dolce trained briefly as a fashion designer at the Marangoni Institute in Milan. Gabbana studied graphic arts at the Higher Institute for Artistic Industries in Rome. The two worked together as assistant designers for the Italian designer Giorgio Correggiari in Milan before eventually founding their own fashion label (brand), Dolce & Gabbana.

In 1985, Dolce and Gabbana launched their first fashion collection at Milan Fashion Week. But they only achieved true success in 1987, when they designed a collection inspired by Dolce’s native Sicily. It featured sleek, feminine shapes, figure-hugging dresses made of lace and Sicilian prints, and fabrics and images inspired by the island’s Spanish and Roman influences. The designers then built up a highly successful fashion brand that continued to draw from their Italian culture and had global appeal.

In addition to women’s wear, both ready-to-wear and alta moda (high fashion), Dolce & Gabbana creates clothing for men and children, lingerie, men’s underwear, accessories, perfumes , and a range of beauty products . The designers have won many international awards, including the 1991 Woolmark Award for the most innovative men’s collection of the year, and awards for their men’s and women’s fragrances. They have dressed such celebrities as the American singer Madonna and the Italian actress Sophia Loren.
