Hunter, Erin

Hunter, Erin, is the pen name of a team of seven writers who together have created four popular series of fantasy novels for children —”Warriors,” “Seekers,” “Survivors,” and “Bravelands.” All the novels center on animals living in the wild. The books have been praised for their exciting narratives and their realistic descriptions of the dangers animals face in the world of nature.

The writing team consists of Cherith Baldry, Rosie Best, Kate Cary, Victoria Holmes, and Gillian Philip of the United Kingdom; Israeli-born Inbali Iserles of the United Kingdom; and Venezuelan-born Tui Sutherland of the United States. Victoria Holmes develops the plots, and the others write the stories.

In the earliest series, “Warriors,” Hunter portrays four clans of wild cats living in a forest as they compete for supremacy and have numerous adventures. The series, which was later renamed “Warriors: The Prophesies Begin,” started with Into the Wild (2003). The original “Warriors” series was followed by several others: “Warriors: The New Prophecy”; “Warriors: Power of Three”; “Warriors: Omen of the Stars”; “Warriors: Dawn of the Clans”; and “Warriors: A Vision of Shadows.” There are also several series of graphic novels called “Warriors Manga.” In books called “Warriors: Field Guides,” Hunter provides background information on the cats in the series, including the clans and their codes and secrets.

The “Seekers” series follows four bear cubs. They are a polar bear named Kallik; a black bear named Lusa; a small bear named Ujurak who can change his shape into any animal; and Toklo, a grizzly bear. Led by Ujurak, the four seek a place to live away from interfering human beings. The original series began in 2008 with The Quest Begins and was followed by the series “Seekers: Return to the Wild” and “Seekers Manga.” Another series, “Survivors,” follows the adventures of a dog named Lucky as he tries to survive in a hostile world. The series began with The Empty City (2012). The series was followed by “Survivors: The Gathering Darkness.”

In 2017, the “Bravelands” series was introduced, with the first volume titled Broken Pride. It tells the stories of a lion, an elephant, and a baboon on the African plains.
