Sloughi << SLOO gee >> , also called the Arabian greyhound, is a breed of dog with a lean, balanced body. It originated in North Africa. Historically, the sloughi was used to hunt gazelles, fox, hares, jackals, and wild pigs.
The sloughi is tall, slender, and elegant. It stands about 24 to 29 inches (61 to 74 centimeters) tall at the shoulder and weighs from 35 to 50 pounds (16 to 23 kilograms). The sloughi has a smooth, short-haired coat that may be any solid shade of sand or mahogany red fawn. The dog may have a black mask (face), mantle (back and shoulders), and brindle (streaking).
The sloughi can run at fast speeds and jump high. It is protective and makes a good guard dog. Sloughis tend to be solitary and may not get along well with other dogs.
