American hairless terrier, sometimes called the AHT, is a breed of dog that has a completely hairless variety. The dog originated from the southern United States in the 1970’s after a hairless puppy appeared in a litter of rat terriers. The American hairless terrier was originally bred to hunt squirrels.
The American hairless terrier stands 12 to 16 inches (30 to 41 centimeters) tall at the shoulder. It weighs 12 to 16 pounds (5 to 7 kilograms). The hairless variety is completely without hair, but some may have eyebrows and whiskers. It may be any color or combination of colors, except albino or merle (dark blotches against a lighter background of the same color). There is a coated variety of the American hairless terrier. It has a short, shiny coat, but still carries the hairless gene.
The American hairless terrier is alert, curious, energetic, and intelligent. They make excellent companions and watchdogs.
