Toronto FC joined MLS in 2007. The team struggled in its early seasons, regularly finishing at or near the bottom of the standings. In 2015, the club signed Italian star forward Sebastian Giovinco. That year, Giovinco led MLS in scoring and assists and earned the Landon Donovan MLS MVP Award as the league’s best player. His efforts helped Toronto reach the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time, where the team lost in the first round to the Montreal Impact (now called CF Montreal). In 2016, Toronto reached the MLS Cup final, but lost the championship to Seattle Sounders FC. Toronto defeated Seattle in the 2017 MLS Cup final to win the team’s first championship. Toronto again faced Seattle in the 2019 MLS Cup final, but lost.

Toronto FC has had more success in domestic competition. The Reds won the Canadian Championship, that country’s top professional tournament, in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2020. Each Canadian Championship qualified Toronto for the CONCACAF Champions League. CONCACAF stands for Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Association Football, and the league is an annual tournament among that region’s best professional clubs. The Reds have advanced as far as the Champions League finals.
