Chinook is a breed of sled dog developed in New Hampshire in 1917. The Chinook has a short, tawny (tan) coat and dark almond eyes with black eye markings. It stands from 22 to 26 inches (56 to 66 centimeters) tall and weighs 55 to 90 pounds (25 to 40 kilograms). The Chinook is a loyal, noble, and affectionate dog known for its love of children.
The dog was originally bred for drafting (cart pulling) and sled dog racing. The breed is named for its principal male ancestor, a dog named Chinook. The breed was developed by the American adventurer Arthur Treadwell Walden. In 1928, Walden and 16 of the dogs accompanied the American explorer Admiral Richard Byrd on his first Antarctic expedition.
