Leonberger is a large dog originally bred in Germany in the 1800’s. The name comes from the town, Leonberg, in which the breed originated. Legend has it that it was bred to look like a lion, similar to the one on the crest of the town.
The Leonberger has a medium to long double coat of reddish brown, sandy, or yellow, with a black mask. Males have a lionlike mane on the neck and chest. The Leonberger stands 25 1/2 to 31 1/2 inches (65 to 80 centimeters) tall at the shoulder and may weigh from 90 to 170 pounds (40 to 77 kilograms).
The Leonberger is friendly, dependable, and confident. It makes a great family, farm, and draft (pulling loads) dog.
