Berger Picard << bair ZHAY pee KAHR >> is an ancient breed of dog used to herd sheep and cattle. It is believed to be the oldest of the French sheepdogs having been in the area since perhaps the 800’s. Berger is the French word for shepherd. Picard comes from the region in northern France where the breed originated, Picardy.
The berger Picard stands 21 1/2 to 25 1/2 inches (55 to 65 centimeters) tall at the shoulder and may weigh 50 to 70 pounds (20 to 30 kilograms). It has a tousled, wiry coat that may be fawn (a light yellowish-brown) or brindled (marked by darker streaks and spots). The ears of the berger Picard are set rather high on the skull.
The berger Picard is alert, lively, and observant. They work well with people.
