Miniature American shepherd is a breed of herding dog that originated in California in the 1960’s. It was created by the breeding of small Australian shepherds. Miniature American shepherds are most often used to herd small livestock, such as sheep and goats.
The miniature American shepherd measures 13 to 18 inches (33 to 46 centimeters) tall at the shoulder and weighs 20 to 40 pounds (9 to 18 kilograms). Its double (two-layered) coat may be red merle (dark blotches against a lighter background), blue merle, or red or black with white and tan markings. A unique characteristic of the miniature American shepherd is that its eyes may be different colors. Its eyes may be brown, blue, hazel, amber, or any other color combination.
Miniature American shepherds are versatile, energetic, devoted, and athletic. They make great therapy dogs and loyal companions.
