Torres, Dara (1967-…), was a champion American swimmer . Torres was the first swimmer to represent the United States in five Olympic Games —1984, 1988, 1992, 2000, and 2008. She won 12 medals in the Olympics—four gold, four silver, and four bronze. During her career, Torres set world records in the 50-meter freestyle and as a member of the 4×100-meter freestyle relay and the 4×100-meter medley relay.
Torres won her first Olympic gold medal as a member of the U.S. 4×100-meter freestyle relay team in 1984 in Los Angeles. Her other gold medals came as a member of the U.S. 4×100 meter freestyle relay team in 1992 in Barcelona, Spain, and in the 4×100-meter freestyle and 4×100-meter medley relays in Sydney, Australia, in 2000. She won three silver medals in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. In Beijing, at the age of 41, she became the oldest swimmer in Olympic history to win a medal.
Dara Grace Torres was born in Beverly Hills, California, on April 15, 1967. She began swimming at the age of 7. When she was 14, she won the national open championship in the 50-yard freestyle. In 1986, she enrolled at the University of Florida and swam on the school’s swimming and diving team for four years.
Torres has worked as a television sports reporter and announcer. She has also written two books, Age Is Just a Number (2009) and Gold Medal Fitness (2010).
