McDavid, Connor (1997-…), a Canadian hockey player, is a star center for the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League (NHL). In the 2016-2017 season, his second in the NHL, McDavid won the Art Ross Trophy as the league’s scoring leader with 100 points (30 goals and 70 assists). That season, McDavid also won the Ted Lindsay Award as the league’s most outstanding player, as chosen by his fellow NHL players, and the Hart Memorial Trophy as the player most valuable to his team. McDavid also won the Art Ross Trophy in the 2017-2018 season with 108 points (41 goals and 67 assists), the 2020-2021 season with 105 points (33 goals and 72 assists), the 2021-2022 season with 123 points (44 goals and 79 assists), and the 2022-2023 season with 153 points (64 goals and 89 assists). In addition, McDavid won the Ted Lindsay Award after the 2017-2018 and 2020-2021 seasons and his second Hart Memorial Trophy after the 2020-2021 season.
McDavid was born on Jan. 13, 1997, in Richmond Hill, Ontario. He was named Player of the Year for the 2011–2012 season of the amateur Greater Toronto Hockey League. Hockey Canada, the governing body for amateur hockey in Canada, then granted McDavid “Exceptional Player” status. This status permitted McDavid to play in the professional Ontario Hockey League (OHL) a year earlier than would otherwise be allowed for a player his age. McDavid played for the Erie Otters of the OHL from the 2012-2013 season through the 2014-2015 season. His outstanding play made him one of the most publicized players in Canada.
The Edmonton Oilers made McDavid the first selection in the 2015 NHL player draft. He entered the league in 2015 at the age of 18 and immediately gained fame for his speed and his deceptive moves with the puck. An injury limited McDavid’s first season with the Oilers to 45 games, but he still scored 48 points.
In 2017, McDavid signed an 8-year, $100-million contract extension with the Oilers. The extension’s average annual value of $12.5 million set a record for the NHL.
