Gerard, Red

Gerard, Red (2000-…), is a star American snowboarder. Gerard won the gold medal in the snowboarding slopestyle event at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. In slopestyle competition, athletes perform a series of tricks on a special course that includes such obstacles as rails and jumps. Gerard became the youngest American ever to win a medal in snowboarding at the Winter Olympics. He also competed in the big air event, finishing fifth. Big air is an extreme version of slopestyle. It involves taking off from a large ramp, executing a complicated trick high in the air, and landing with full control of the snowboard.

Gerard began entering amateur snowboarding events in 2008. He was competing in professional tour events by 2015. That year, he finished fourth in the slopestyle at the Junior World Championships organized by the Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS). The organization is the highest international governing body for skiing and snowboarding. Gerard won the 2017 slopestyle World Cup season championship. The World Cup competition consists of a series of annual events, supervised by FIS, in which athletes accumulate points toward a final seasonal ranking. In 2020, Gerard won a bronze medal in slopestyle at the X Games. In 2024, he won the gold medal in slopestyle at the X Games.

Redmond Baird Gerard was born in Westlake, Ohio, on June 29, 2000. He began snowboarding at the age of 2. Gerard moved to Colorado with his family in the winter of 2007-2008. He trains at his own snowboarding park at his home in Silverthorne, Colorado. While competing, he took high school classes online.
