Grand basset griffon vendéen << grand bah SAY gree FOHN vohn day OHN >> is a medium-sized, rough-coated, sturdy dog bred to hunt game, especially boar, deer, hare, and rabbit. The name is sometimes abbreviated GBGV. The breed originated in Vendée, a region of rough terrain in western France. It is a scent hound, which means it hunts by following the scent of the game animal.
The grand basset griffon vendéen has long, narrow ears, a long muzzle, and a long tail. It has a mustache and beard and long, protective eyebrows. Its rough coat is mostly white with orange or gray markings. The GBGV stands 15 ½ to 18 inches (39 to 46 centimeters) tall at the shoulder and may weigh from 40 to 45 pounds (18 to 20 kilograms).
The GBGV is friendly, outgoing, and independent. It makes a good family dog.
