McGregor, Conor (1988-…), an Irish mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter, became one of the most famous MMA fighters of the 2000’s. Mixed martial arts is a sport that combines elements of boxing, wrestling, and many other styles of unarmed fighting. McGregor held championships in two weight classes, the featherweight and the lightweight.
Conor Anthony McGregor was born in Dublin, Ireland, on July 14, 1988. He is 5 feet 9 inches (1.75 meters) tall and weighs 155 pounds (70 kilograms). He began his MMA career in 2007 as an amateur. After winning his first fight, he turned professional and fought his first bout in 2008.
McGregor fought as part of the Cage Warriors organization until 2013, when he joined the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) organization. He defeated Chad Mendes to win the interim featherweight title on July 11, 2015, and defeated Jose Aldo on Dec. 12, 2015, to win the unified featherweight title. McGregor won the lightweight title on Nov. 12, 2016, with a victory over Eddie Alvarez. With that victory, McGregor became the first MMA fighter to hold UFC titles in two different weight classes at the same time. McGregor was stripped of his featherweight championship in 2016 and his lightweight championship in 2018 for failure to defend the titles within the required amount of time.
McGregor has also caused controversy. In 2018, he was charged with diorderly conduct for his involvement in a disturbance at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. McGregor pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five days of community service. In 2019, his participation in a brawl following a fight against the Russian fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov resulted in a fine and suspension from the ring for six months.
