Meghan, Duchess of Sussex (1981-… ), is the name commonly used for Meghan Markle, the American wife of Prince Harry of the United Kingdom. Meghan is a former actress who starred in the television drama “Suits” from 2011 to 2018 and appeared in several motion pictures. She announced her retirement from acting after her engagement to Prince Harry in late November 2017. Meghan is the first United States citizen to be officially married to a member of the British royal family. She is also the first known member of the royal family with Black heritage (her mother is African American).
Rachel Meghan Markle was born on Aug. 4, 1981, in Los Angeles, California. She grew up in suburban Los Angeles and was educated in private schools. She graduated from Northwestern University in Illinois in 2003 with a double major in theater and international relations. She began appearing in television shows in 2002.
Meghan married the American producer Trevor Engelson in 2011. The couple divorced about two years later. She began her relationship with Prince Harry in July 2016. They married on May 19, 2018, at Windsor Castle near London. Their son, Archie Harrison, who is sixth in line to the British throne, was born on May 6, 2019. A daughter, Lilibet Diana, is seventh in line to the throne. She was born on June 6, 2021.
