Dixon, Scott (1980-…), is a champion New Zealand automobile racing driver. Since 2003, Dixon has raced in the IndyCar Series (now NTT IndyCar Series), a spring-to-autumn schedule of races primarily held in North America. Indy cars have a single seat, an open cockpit, and open wheels—that is, wheels positioned outside the body of the car. Dixon won the IndyCar Series in 2003, 2008, 2013, 2015, 2018, and 2020. In 2008, he won the Indianapolis 500 , the most famous race in the annual NTT IndyCar Series. Dixon was the first New Zealander to win this race.
Scott Ronald Dixon was born on July 22, 1980, in Brisbane, Australia. Both his mother and father were dirt track automobile racing drivers from New Zealand. Dixon’s parents returned to New Zealand when he was a child. He grew up in Manurewa, a suburb of Auckland. Dixon began racing go-karts when he was seven years old. In the mid-1990’s he competed in races for Formula Vee and Formula Ford Class 2 cars. Dixon returned to Australia to race in 1997 and then moved to the United States in 1999. He joined the Chip Ganassi Racing team in 2002 and began racing Indy cars for the team in 2003.
Dixon has also been successful in sports car racing. He won the 24-hour Daytona sports car race in 2006, 2015, and 2018. He was named New Zealand Sportsman of the Year in 2008 and 2013. In 2009, Dixon was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to motorsport. In 2019, he was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
