The American writer and editor Stan Lee and the American artist Jack Kirby created the Avengers in 1963. The team’s first appearance, in the comic book The Avengers #1, came after Thor’s brother, the villain Loki, tried to falsely place blame on a powerful hero called the Hulk for destroying a train. The Marvel heroes Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man, and the Wasp teamed up to battle the Hulk, before discovering Loki’s plot. The heroes worked together to stop Loki and decided to form a permanent team. Captain America joined the team in The Avengers #4, after he was found frozen in a block of ice.

The Avengers are a highly coordinated team tasked with fighting extremely powerful threats. The team line-up changes frequently, but there is always a leader who directs the course of battle. Captain America and Iron Man have become the team’s most recognized leaders. The Avengers have fought many powerful enemies, including the android (humanlike machine) Ultron and the cosmic titan Thanos. They also fought in a galaxywide conflict known as the Kree-Skrull War.

The Avengers have appeared in a number of motion pictures from Marvel Studios. These films tie together movie series based on such Avengers heroes as Captain America and Iron Man. They include The Avengers (2012), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019).
