Betts, Mookie (1992-…), is one of the best players in Major League Baseball (MLB). Betts, a fast base runner and powerful hitter, plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers of the National League (NL). Before his trade to the Dodgers in 2020, Betts had played for the Boston Red Sox of the American League (AL). Since his first MLB season in 2014, Betts has won six Gold Glove awards for being the best defensive right fielder. He has been named to seven All-Star teams. In 2018, Betts hit 32 home runs, stole 30 bases, and led the AL in batting average (.346) and runs scored (129). He was named the league’s Most Valuable Player. Betts throws and hits right-handed.
Markus Lynn Betts was born on Oct. 7, 1992, in Nashville, Tennessee. Betts excelled at baseball, basketball, and bowling in high school. He was nicknamed “Mookie” after former National Basketball Association star Mookie Blaylock. After Betts graduated from high school, the Red Sox selected him in the fifth round of the 2011 MLB amateur draft. He played in the minor leagues before beginning to play in Major League Baseball in June 2014. Betts is also an accomplished bowler and has competed in professional bowling tournaments.
