Do was born on June 2, 1977, in Vietnam . His family, like many others, fled Vietnam in the aftermath of the Vietnam War (1957-1975). They traveled by boat to Australia when Do was a child. During the journey, they were attacked by pirates and set adrift for days. Do describes the journey and its impact on his life in The Happiest Refugee. After migrating, Do earned a dual degree in business and law from the University of Technology Sydney. However, rather than pursue a career in law, he began performing stand-up comedy.

Do acted in, co-wrote, and produced the motion picture Footy Legends (2006) with his brother, the filmmaker Khoa Do. Do also hosts “Anh Does…” (2012-), a television series in which he travels the world.

In addition to his memoir, Do has written a number of books for children. Weir Do (2013), the first book in his “Weir Do” series, won an Australian Book Industry Award for children’s book of the year in 2014.

Do is also a celebrated painter. In 2014 and 2017, he was a finalist for the Archibald Prize , an annual Australian prize for portrait painting.
