Eilish << EYE lihsh >>, Billie (2001-…), is an American singer and songwriter. She first became known for songs that mix genres (styles) and for her unique personal style, which was often described as “modern goth.” Goth fashion features dark clothing, stark makeup, and dramatically dyed hair. Her album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? (2019) debuted at number one on Billboard magazine’s “Billboard 200” music chart, making Eilish the first musician born in the 2000’s to have a number-one album in the United States.
Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell was born on Dec. 18, 2001, in Los Angeles, California. Her brother, Finneas O’Connell, is her co-writer, collaborator, and touring partner. Eilish recorded her first hit, “Ocean Eyes,” in 2015. She was 14 years old. In 2017, after releasing a string of singles, Eilish released her debut EP, Don’t Smile at Me. EP stands for extended play. This type of musical recording includes several songs but is not considered a full-length album.
In 2020, Eilish, with Finneas, won Grammy Awards for record of the year and song of the year for the single “Bad Guy.” Also in 2020, Eilish also won Grammys for album of the year and best pop vocal album for When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?; and a Grammy for best new artist. She was the youngest solo performer to win a Grammy for album of the year. She was also the first woman to win Grammys for record of the year, album of the year, song of the year, and best new artist in the same year.
Eilish’s second album, Happier Than Ever, was released in 2021. That same year, she won a Grammy Award for record of the year for the single “Everything I Wanted” (2019). Eilish and Finneas wrote the song “No Time to Die” for the 2021 “James Bond” motion picture of the same name. They won several awards for the song. These included a Grammy for best song written for visual media, in 2021; an Academy Award for best original song, in 2022; and a Golden Globe Award for best original song written for a motion picture, also in 2022. Eilish was the youngest singer ever to record a theme song for the “James Bond” film series.
Eilish and Finneas wrote three original songs for the animated movie Turning Red (2022). The siblings also wrote the song “What Was I Made For?” for the movie Barbie (2023). In 2024, they won Grammy Awards for song of the year and best song written for visual media for “What Was I Made For?” That same year, the song also won them a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award for best original song written for a motion picture.
Eilish has spoken frequently about living with Tourette syndrome, an inherited disorder characterized by involuntary utterances and body movements.
