Brown, Chris (1989-…), is an American rhythm and blues (R&B) singer, dancer, and actor. Brown became popular for his melodic voice and skilled dance moves. But his career has at times been marred by violent behavior, including his highly publicized 2009 assault of the Barbadian-born pop star Rihanna .

Christopher Maurice Brown was born May 5, 1989, in Tappahannock, Virginia , northeast of Richmond. He was discovered by talent scouts as a teenager. He signed a recording contract with the label Jive Records in 2004. Brown released his first album, Chris Brown, in 2005 at the age of 16. It included the song “Run It,” which reached number one on Billboard magazine’s “Hot 100” music chart. “Kiss Kiss,” from his second album, Exclusive (2007), also reached number one on the “Hot 100” chart. Brown’s albums F.A.M.E. (2011) and Fortune (2012) both reached number one on the “Billboard 200” music chart. F.A.M.E. won a Grammy Award for best R&B album. Brown’s album Indigo (2019) debuted at number one on the “Billboard 200” chart.

In 2009, Brown pled guilty to assaulting Rihanna, his girlfriend at the time. Brown has since been involved in several violent incidents. He has received treatment for anger management problems.

Brown has collaborated with a number of other recording artists, including will.i.am of the group Black Eyed Peas, T-Pain, and Kanye West . Brown has also acted on television and in motion pictures. In 2007, he appeared in the TV series “The O.C.” He has appeared in such movies as Stomp the Yard and This Christmas (both 2007) and Think Like a Man (2012).
