Captain America is a patriotic comic-book superhero who fights evil with the help of a powerful shield . He is a genetically modified soldier who has reached the peak of human physical potential. Captain America has great strength and endurance. He is also a gifted leader. He has long been one of the most popular superheroes of the publisher Marvel Comics .
Captain America is the superhero identity of Steve Rogers, a frail orphan from New York City . Rogers was selected to participate in a secret United States government experiment to create a super soldier during World War II (1939-1945). He was given a serum and exposed to radiation. This treatment caused his body to grow taller, more muscular, and more agile (able to move quickly and easily). Rogers also displayed natural leadership abilities and helped to inspire American troops in the war. He fought with his sidekick Bucky Barnes against such villains as the masked Nazi agent Red Skull and the scientist Baron Zemo.
Captain America wears a red, white, and blue uniform to match the colors of the United States flag . He uses a round shield for protection and can throw it as a weapon. Near the end of the war, Rogers fell into the freezing ocean after destroying a Nazi plane. The effects of the serum prevented Rogers from drowning, but he was frozen in a state of “suspended animation,” a kind of inactivity. He remained that way until the Avengers superhero team discovered and revived him. Rogers soon became a leader of the Avengers. 
The American artists Joe Simon and Jack Kirby created Captain America in 1941, just a few months before the United States entered World War II. The character first appeared in “Captain America Comics” (1941-1954), a comic-book series published by Timely Comics. During the 1950’s, Captain America’s popularity declined. The character was revived in 1964, after Timely Comics had become Marvel Comics. His first solo comic-book series published by Marvel was “Captain America” (1968-1996).
Captain America has appeared in many television programs and motion pictures, including a number of popular films produced by Marvel Studios in the early 2000’s. The American actor Chris Evans played Steve Rogers and Captain America in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and its sequels, and in The Avengers (2012) and its sequels.
