Blind snake is a tiny snake that lives underground. There are many different species (kinds). Blind snakes rarely grow to 12 inches (30 centimeters) in length. They are light pink to dark brown or gray in color and may easily be mistaken for earthworms. Their eyes are completely covered by scales on the head.
Blind snakes live in warm to tropical areas. They are found on every continent except Antarctica.
Scientists know relatively little about blind snakes because they are small and spend nearly all of their time underground. Many are thought to feed on the larvae and pupae of such insects as ants and termites. Blind snakes may be preyed upon by just about any predator that takes small prey, including birds, cats, and other snakes.
Blind snakes are harmless to people. When bothered, some species may give off a foul odor or strike with a spine on the tail.
