D’Amelio, Charli (2004-…) is an American dancer and social media personality. She first became popular on the social media service TikTok. In April 2020, D’Amelio became the first person to reach 50 million followers on TikTok. In November 2020, she surpassed 100 million followers.
Charli Grace D’Amelio was born May 1, 2004, in Norwalk, Connecticut. She started dancing at age three. D’Amelio competed in dance competitions for a decade. She joined TikTok shortly after turning 15, in May 2019. Her videos became popular for their easy-to-follow dance moves. D’Amelio helped to popularize the dance known as the Renegade, created by Jalaiah Harmon. Many followers were also drawn to D’Amelio’s relatable personality. TikTok’s programming also contributed to her viral (rapidly expanding) success. As more people followed her and liked and shared her videos, the service suggested them to more and more users. By September 2020, her videos had amassed over 6 billion likes. D’Amelio became a member of Hype House—a collective (group) of TikTok users creating popular content—along with her older sister Dixie. Their parents, Marc and Heidi D’Amelio, also post on TikTok.
D’Amelio’s fame has spread beyond TikTok. She wrote the book Essentially Charli: The Ultimate Guide to Keeping It Real (2020). She has also released videos on other sites, such as YouTube. These longer-form videos focus on specific topics, such as baking or product reviews. They often feature guest celebrities. The members of the D’Amelio family are the subjects of “The D’Amelio Show,” a reality television series that premiered in 2021.
