The series takes place in a world where most people have a unique inborn superpower, called a quirk. Individuals can develop their quirks to become heroes. Heroes attend special training schools. They are licensed by the government and work in cooperation with authorities. Top heroes enjoy celebrity status and are ranked, in a satire of manga and superhero fan culture.

“My Hero Academia” follows the story of Izuku Midoriya, a young boy. Izuku lacks a quirk but nonetheless dreams of becoming a hero. His fortunes begin to change when he attracts the attention of Japan’s greatest hero, All Might. All Might decides to share his quirk with Izuku and to help him enroll in an elite high school for heroes. Izuku becomes known by the hero name Deku.

“My Hero Academia” has become known for its inventive and sometimes silly superhero identities and quirks. For example, the hero Fat Gum rapidly accumulates body fat. He can employ his fat as armor, use it to absorb foes, or metabolize (burn) it to produce incredible energy.

The manga was first serialized (published in regular installments) in the Japanese magazine Weekly Shonen Jump beginning in 2014. It has since been collected in dozens of volumes and produced several spinoffs. The anime series premiered in Japan in 2016. It has spawned a number of motion pictures.
