Charlotte’s Web

Charlotte’s Web is a popular children’s novel written by the American author E. B. White. Charlotte’s Web was first published in 1952 by Harper & Brothers (now HarperCollins). Charlotte’s Web was White’s second children’s book. His first book for children was Stuart Little (1945). The original edition of Charlotte’s Web was illustrated by the American artist Garth Williams.

The story takes place on the farm of Homer Zuckerman. Fern Arable, Zuckerman’s young niece, rescues the runt of a litter of piglets, whom she names Wilbur. Wilbur grows lonely as Fern’s visits become less frequent. He befriends a barn spider named Charlotte. When Wilbur realizes that the Zuckermans are raising him for slaughter, Charlotte hatches a plan to save his life. The story has endeared readers with its portrayal of the loyalty and friendship between the naive Wilbur and the wise Charlotte.

Charlotte’s Web has been adapted into a number of motion pictures. An animated musical adaptation, also titled Charlotte’s Web, was released in 1973. A live-action Charlotte’s Web was released in 2006.
