Attack on Titan is among the most popular manga and anime series of the 2010’s. Manga are Japanese comic books. Anime is a distinctly Japanese style of animation. “Attack on Titan” is an action and fantasy series. It is set in a world where humanity has been pushed to the brink of extinction by the mysterious Titans. The Titans are giant, humanoid monsters that attack and eat humans on sight. 
“Attack on Titan” tells the story of Eren Yeager, a young man who grows up in a settlement walled for protection against the Titans. In an attack, the Titans destroy Yeager’s hometown and kill his mother. Yeager joins the military to seek his vengeance and destroy the Titan threat.
The series is noted for the bizarre and horrifying appearance of the Titans. To outmaneuver the towering beasts, human fighters use a waist-mounted system of air-powered grappling hooks called Vertical Maneuvering Equipment. The unit enables them to swoop and swing around the Titans, contributing to the action of the series.
“Attack on Titan” was created by the Japanese artist Hajime Isayama. It was serialized (published in installments) in Bessatsu Shonen Magazine from 2009 to 2021. It has been collected in dozens of volumes. The anime series premiered in 2013 and began airing its final season in 2022. The series has launched many spin-offs, including novels and video games.
