CoComelon is a series of short, animated videos for very young children. The CoComelon channel is one of the most popular channels in the history of the video-sharing website YouTube. The videos are also available from such streaming services as Netflix and Hulu.
“CoComelon” videos are set to both traditional and original children’s songs. They often feature a toddler named JJ and his family, friends, and classmates, as well as animal characters.
“CoComelon” was created by the Korean-American filmmaker Jay Jeon and his wife, a children’s book illustrator. In the mid-2000’s, they began making simple animated videos to amuse their children. Encouraged by friends, the couple started posting the short videos on YouTube in 2006.
In 2017, the Jeons’ YouTube channel, then named ABC Kid TV, began posting short videos animated using three-dimensional computer-generated imagery (CGI). These videos introduced the character JJ. The channel’s popularity began to increase rapidly around this time. In 2018, the Jeons changed the channel’s name, choosing CoComelon, a combination of the words coconut and watermelon. In 2020, the channel’s videos surpassed 100 billion total views.
