Biney, Maame

Biney, Maame << MAH may >> (2000-…), is a United States short-track speed skater. Short-track speed skating is a form of competitive ice skating on a rink that is 346 feet (111 meters) around. Biney was the first Black American woman to qualify for the U.S. Olympic short-track speed skating team.

Biney was born on Jan. 28, 2000, in Accra, Ghana. When Biney was young, her father immigrated to the United States. She visited him in the Washington, D.C., area when she was five years old. Her mother and brother returned to Ghana, but Biney chose to stay. Biney’s father noticed a sign for ice skating and signed her up for lessons. The instructor was impressed with her speed and suggested speed skating. Biney began speed skating competitively when she was six years old. She also competed in taekwondo until 2015.

In January 2017, Biney won the bronze medal in the 500-meter race at the Short Track Junior World Championships in Innsbruck, Austria. In 2018, she won gold in the 500-meter, bronze in the 1000-meter, and an overall bronze at the Short Track Junior World Championships in Tomaszów Mazowiecki, Poland.

In December 2017, Biney won the 500-meter race at the Olympic team trials. She competed in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Biney finished 14th in the 500-meter race and 31st in the 1,500-meter race. Biney graduated from South Lakes High School in Reston, Virginia, in 2018.

She returned to the Short Track Junior World Championships in 2019, winning gold in the 500-meter race in Montreal, Canada. At the 2021 U.S. Short-Track Championships in Kearns, Utah, Biney won gold in the 500-meter, 1000-meter, and 1500-meter races. She won the women’s overall title for her performance. At the trials for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, China, Biney finished first in the 500-meter race, securing her place on the United States team.
