Burrow, Joe (1996-…), is a star quarterback in the National Football League (NFL). Burrow has earned praise for his poise, precision passing, and decision-making on the field.
Burrow led the Cincinnati Bengals to a 10-7 record in the 2021 regular season and the team’s first playoff appearance since 2016. The Bengals then achieved their first playoff win since 1991 and advanced to the 2022 Super Bowl, where they were defeated by the Los Angeles Rams 23-20.
Joseph Lee Burrow was born on Dec. 10, 1996, in Ames, Iowa. His father, Jim Burrow, was a former professional football player. Burrow’s family moved several times during his childhood as his father pursued college coaching opportunities. They eventually settled in The Plains, Ohio, a suburb of Athens, when Burrow was 8 years old. Burrow played football and basketball for Athens High School, excelling in both sports.
Burrow attended Ohio State University from 2015 to 2018. He was on the football team but received little playing time. In 2018, Burrow transferred to Louisiana State University (LSU) and became the starting quarterback for the Tigers.
In 2019, Burrow put together one of the greatest season-long performances by a college quarterback. LSU went 15-0, then defeated Clemson University to win the 2020 College Football National Championship. Burrow threw for 5,671 yards and 60 touchdowns against 6 interceptions. He earned the 2019 Heisman Memorial Trophy, for the best college player, by the widest voting margin in the history of the award. During Burrow’s acceptance speech, he brought attention to food insecurity (the lack of sufficient access to food) in Athens and Athens County.
The Bengals selected Burrow with the first overall pick of the 2020 NFL draft. Burrow began the season as Cincinnati’s starting quarterback. He suffered a knee injury during the 10th game of the season, ending a promising rookie campaign.
