Stafford spent his first 12 seasons with the Detroit Lions. In 2021, the Lions traded him to the Rams for quarterback Jared Goff and future draft picks. In his first season with the Rams, Stafford led the team to a 23-20 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2022 Super Bowl.

John Matthew Stafford was born on Feb. 7, 1988, in Tampa, Florida. He attended Highland Park High School in Dallas, Texas, where he played baseball and football with future Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher Clayton Kershaw. Stafford attended the University of Georgia from 2006 to 2008.

The Detroit Lions selected Stafford with the first overall pick of the 2009 NFL draft. During his rookie season, he led a dramatic come-from-behind victory against the Cleveland Browns, making the game-winning pass despite sustaining a shoulder injury on the previous play. Injuries shortened Stafford’s first two seasons, but he went on to start every game for the Lions from 2011 through 2018. Despite Stafford’s high level of play, the Lions never won a playoff game while he was with the team.
