Murray, Kyler (1997-…), is an outstanding quarterback in the National Football League (NFL). Murray combines efficient passing with great mobility to keep defenses off balance. He plays for the Arizona Cardinals.
Kyler Cole Murray was born on Aug. 7, 1997, in Bedford, Texas, between Dallas and Fort Worth. He grew up in nearby Lewisville and excelled at baseball and football. Murray attended Lewisville High School for one year, but he transferred to Allen High School in 2012 when his family moved. The Allen Eagles football team was 42-0 in the games that Murray started and won three state championships.
Murray joined Texas A&M University in 2015. He struggled to earn playing time on the Aggies football team during his freshman year. Murray transferred to the University of Oklahoma (OU) at the conclusion of the season. He sat out the 2016 season as required by National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules for transfer students. In 2017, he backed up the Sooners’ starting quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Murray also played baseball at OU. Over the 50-game 2018 season, he batted .297 with 10 home runs, 47 runs batted in (RBI), and 13 stolen bases. The Oakland Athletics selected him ninth overall in the 2018 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft, but Murray chose to return to OU to play football.
Murray took over as starter for the departing Mayfield in 2018, authoring a historic season. He passed for 4,361 yards and 42 touchdowns and rushed for 1,001 yards and 12 touchdowns. Murray led the Sooners to a 12-2 record and an appearance in the Orange Bowl. His performance earned him the 2018 Heisman Trophy as the best college player.
The Cardinals selected Murray first overall in the 2019 NFL Draft. He made an immediate impact on the lackluster team, passing for 3,722 yards and 20 touchdowns and rushing for 544 yards and 4 touchdowns. The Associated Press named Murray the 2019 Offensive Rookie of the Year.
